Week 11

Word of the week:
Plangent (adj)

1.Beating with a loud or deep sound, as, "the plangent wave."

2.Expressing sadness; plaintive.

This week, I want to share with you a painting calls "The Outsider" by a famous 20th century American Illustrator, Norman Rockwell. The artist is known for his impressive, almost photographic technique. His paintings are beautiful and realistic. This piece depicts a young woman wearing a white dress looking at herself through the big mirror. There is an open magazine placing on top of her lap, and a doll on the floor on the left side of the mirror. The magazine page shows a big picture of a beautiful women’s face. The girls' eyes reflect a sense of confusion. The audience can only see her face through the reflection of the mirror, leaving the question about whether her real face is the same as the one we see in the mirror?

  1. Norman is my favorite artist too. We have his picture of the family having meal together at our house in Vietnam. Just a copy of course. :)
